The American patriots were wronged by the British government. Unfair taxes without representation. Taxes that were called ‘Intolerable”. Taxes on paper; taxes on tea. Forced to house and quarter British -soldiers. Men killed in the Boston Massacre. The list of grievances was long. But fighting for freedom was necessary.

Their land taken away. More and more people coming West. Treaties broken. Atrocities committed by both sides. A way of life vanishing after hundreds of years. Fighting for freedom by Native Americans was necessary.

Taken away from their home land by people unlike anyone they had seen. Put onto slave ships and taken across the sea. Put in chains and sold like animals. Whipped and abused. Fighting for freedom was necessary. Or fleeing on the Underground Railroad was an answer for slaves.

Escaping and running away. Finding faith and a new way of belief. Going back to the master. In the Bible, Onesimus went back to Philemon as Paul intervened. Freedom was something to be valued.

During the Sail 2026, held in the Hudson River in New York, one could see the tall ships come through, reminding us of days when sailors crossed the seas, searching for freedom. Common to the ships that sailed and the jets that flew-common to those many immigrants who had come to America looking for freedom was one thing -Seeing Lady Liberty-the Statue of Liberty. May we remember those that have gone before, fighting for freedom. And may we all remember Jesus Christ-the One who died for our freedom from the shackles of sin. May God continue to bless our land.
