Pastor’s Corner – February 2025
There was a song in the 70s I think, called “What the World Needs Now is Love, Sweet Love”. It was during the tumultuous times of the 60s and 70s: Vietnam; Civil Rights Movement; Watergate. But it could be argued that we need love even more today.
The trouble between Russia and Ukraine. The ongoing trouble with Israel and the groups sponsored by Iran: Hezbollah; Hamas; and the Houtis. The trouble in our own country divided by politics and ideology. The threat of WW III with China; Russia; Iran; and N. Korea. For people without deep faith, it would be a very worrisome time. But all things are in God’s hands.
It wasn’t easy during Jesus’ time either. Israel was often throughout history caught between warring parties and subject to their whims. People were desperate to have the Romans gone and for a better life. They didn’t understand the need to wait a little longer.
Into this world, Jesus came-the very essence of love. He didn’t come as the Savior they expected, getting rid of the oppressors and meeting the physical needs of the people-that comes later at the Second Coming. No, Jesus was love-and His mission was more than meeting physical needs-but meeting a deep spiritual need for redemption and salvation.
John 3:16 tells us about God’s love in a nutshell. We are going to begin a study of John in Thursday Bible study class beginning Feb 13-the day before Valentine’s Day! The “apostle that Jesus loved” is a great example of the love God and His Son have for each of us. I hope you will join us!
