Anthem to God for Autumn

Fields of countless corn shocks, all in perfect line like a guard of soldiers
Tall and straight and fine, pumpkins piled beside them.
Orange colored shapes, frost-killed vines a-trailing, like torn and tattered drapes;
A pheasant comes a-flying, a streak of gorgeous hue
Blending with the sunset of multi-colors, too.
In the distant wood. A squirrel climbs the trees.
While leaves of gold and crimson are trembling in the breeze.
Oh, when it comes to Autumn, is there not a special reason
For praising God for beauties of this specially lovely season?
-Roy J. Wilkins

Autumn’s Bounty

When summer packs her bag and goes south to other lands,
Autumn moves in swiftly, bearing gifts in both her hands;
Baskets full of pumpkins, crisp red apples too
Everything that’s needed for a fresh-baked pie or two!
To warm you after dinner on a crisp clear Autumn night
Or set a festive table for a holiday delight.
I always welcome Autumn, decked out in leaves of gold
She brings the season’s treasures,
Her bounty to behold! –Micki Dolan

The Dust

I picked up my dust cloth the other day and started to clean in the usual way.
Knick-knacks, pictures, and TV stand, then on the bookshelf my cloth did land.
The books were arranged in the same old way. Yet, the cloth caught on one, and it started to sway.
I picked up the book, and felt really odd. So much dust had formed on the Word of God.
Was it so long since I read this book? I sat down and began to take a hard look.
I read over Scriptures I had underlined, and answers to prayers that had made me feel fine.
God was calling me nearer to Him. Dusting off memories that had grown so dim.
I felt ashamed of the time that had gone by, I took time to talk, and I took time to cry.
So many answers were there for me, under that dust where I couldn’t see.
I thanked Go for leading me to that shelf, helping me to feel better about myself.
In putting the books back that day, I made sure none others got in the way.
The Word of God would stand out from the others, and dust would no longer form on its covers! -Marcia Kuhaneck
